5th Year students TJ Kelly and Niamh Doyle were excellent ambassadors for our school at the NCSE Showcase in The Keadeen Hotel, Newbridge on Thursday, 14th May. Enfield Community College participated in an NCSE 2 Year pilot project on Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The project was facilitated by Ms. Mairéad Gilmartin, Ms. Marie-Louise Naughton and Ms. Helena Mooney. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework designed to improve and optimise teaching for all people by proactively removing barriers in the learning environment. At the showcase, our students had an opportunity to demonstrate the impact that UDL has had on teaching and learning in our school, particularly in the areas of inclusion, growth mindset, learner agency and student voice. Their presentation clearly reflected the ETB Core Values that are central to our school community, especially equality, inclusion, respect, and excellence in education for all learners. Niamh and TJ, together with their teachers, also had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Michael Moynihan, Minister of State at the Department of Education with special responsibility for Special Education and Inclusion, about the work of the UDL Student Voice Committee. The committee researched, prepared, and delivered a lesson for teachers as part of a whole school “Drop Everything and Learn More About UDL” initiative. This student-led approach highlighted the importance of collaboration, empowerment, and active participation in learning. Following the event, Minister Moynihan praised the showcase on his social media platforms, describing it as: A fantastic demonstration of Universal Design for Learning today at the NCSE Showcase event. It was great to see and hear the work being done by participating schools to help support inclusion in their schools. The engagement, enthusiasm and leadership was clear and has been the key to the success of this pilot programme. His comments were a wonderful acknowledgement of the commitment and leadership shown by all involved in the project.
